Ever since I added the following filters to my "nfilter.dat" file,
the spam level in the about six-dozen popular newsgroups to which
I'm currently subscribed has dropped dramatically, in some groups
causing them to appear almost dead. It really does the trick with
the least amount of effort. The added "drop approved" line blocks
some of the sporge because I subscribe only to unmoderated groups:
* drop approved:*@[EMAIL PROTECTED]
* drop message-id:*googlegroups*
* drop references:*googlegroups*
After adding these lines it made filtering out all other spammers,
stalkers, trolls, morons (a.k.a. Atheists), etc. a breeze. I find
it helpful to use a good, freeware notepad-style text editor with
enhanced features (e.g. http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html)
to keep my nfilter.dat file open in the background so it's easier
to add/modify filters whenever an undesirable rears its ugly head.
All you have to do is remember to stop/start NewsProxy and voil`a!
I just wish I'd have blocked "googlegroups" from the beginning. I
know it's not Google's fault, but idiots who abuse their accounts.
If Google ever reins in their infamous "Google Spam" I'll unblock
them. But until then, these newsgroups are a lot quieter nowadays. :)

I use Nfilter to block googlegroups, and to killfile undesirables
