Sensible people have just adopted sensible news readers. There was a
useful thread on the subject some time ago, see

The news readers can eliminate the
mindless posters and any post that responds to them. They have the
advantage that they work with all news groups. If, for some reason,
you are wedded to your existing news reader the thread also mentions
some proxies that you can place between your news server and your news
reader that will do the filtering.
