Toronto Mayor David Miller, online petition to ban handguns in Canada
Toronto Mayor David Miller has launched an on-line petition to have the
federal government legislate an outright ban on the owner****p of
handguns in Canada, believing if such a ban is instituted in Canada it
would reduce the incidence of hand gun crimes.
"Toronto continues to face unacceptable incidents of gun violence," said
Mayor Miller. "These cannot be fully addressed without a total ban on
handguns. Handguns are designed for one purpose and that is to kill
people and have no place in our society. Statistics show that in
jurisdictions with gun bans, supply is limited and shootings are less
common."
I don't know where hizzoner gets his statistics, but generally speaking,
in the two jurisdictions that I know about the exact opposite has
happened. Britain outlawed private owner****p of guns in 1997. As a
result gun crime nearly doubled in the years between 1999 and 2003. In
December of 2002 the UN surveyed 20 of the world's leading nations and
found that England and Wales had the highest crime rate! Australia has
had a similar experience.
I have an idea that will reduce gun crime in Canada by at least 90%:
institute a ban on socialists. The reason there is such a high
incidence of gun crimes in Toronto is the policies advocated and
instituted by people like David Miller and the socialist nutcases who
sup****t them. Instead of locking up or de****ting those who commit gun
crimes, socialists like to seek out "root causes" (that's socialist
terminology for lame excuses). These root causes include everything
from the perpetrators growing up in poverty stricken, broken homes to
the American gun culture to the fact that there are some Canadians that
enjoy target shooting.
We have more than enough legislation in Canada to deal with the problem
of gun crime. What we do not have is the political will to enforce
those laws to the letter. One of Toronto's most recent shootings in
Toronto's Lawrence Heights neighborhood, which resulted in the death of
a young man and the injury of five others, resulted in charges being
laid against a 25-year old man who was out on bail at the time of the
shooting. A second suspect, who apparently was the triggerman, is also
being sought. Apparently he was out on bail at the time as well.
We have also gotten into the habit of giving violent criminals a pass if
they happen to be racial minorities, rather than deal with them in the
same way with which every criminal should be dealt. We make excuses
that range from everything to the perpetrators' skin tones to lack of
education, to poverty, to growing up in single-parent households, to
drugs, to poverty, to society, to the school system that has
"marginalized" them to phases of the moon. Oh, did I mention poverty?
What we do not do is hold these individuals accountable.
Instead, the socialists of Miller's ilk want to ban handgun owner****p in
Canada. Canada already has the toughest gun laws in the western
hemisphere and banning guns outright will do nothing to reduce the
incidence of gun crime for the simple reason that the guns used in those
crimes are illegally obtained, anyway.
I think outlawing socialism would work much better as we could then
start holding those who choose to break the law accountable. It's
amazing how quickly gun crimes would subside if we didn't have
socialists making excuses for the criminals. There would be numerous
additional benefits, as well in the form an improved economy, lower
taxes, a cleaner city and more sun****ne. Okay, I made the last one up.
The mayor's petition highlights the degree to which the socialist brain
trust in Toronto is ideologically bankrupt. The sooner we make being a
socialist illegal, the sooner the incidence of gun crimes will abate.
