Slavery was legal. It was even very popular among lots of people,
surprisingly very few of them were slaves. The problem with slavery was
not
the immigration status of slaves, it was the involuntary nature of their
servitude. Slaves were bought ans sold just like a horse or a cow, and
there
were people -- other than the slaves themselves -- that took exception to
this practice. THIS, the involuntary servitude, being traded like barnyard
animals, is why slavery was outlawed, and slaves were given reparations.
The
act of bringing the slaves here was not smuggling, indeed it was a trade
that was openly practiced.
Chinese immigrants were here legally.
