algae + biofuels

Hey Folks -

     I've been led to understand that the slime one normally associates
with
     algae is a refinable variety of petroleum like "light sweet crude"
and
     this biofuel can be produced quickly and economicly.  This sounds
almost
     too good to believe.

     As I understand it, KLM isn't interested in being dependent on
foreigh
     oil and have started a KLM owned production facilily to produce fuel
     for KLM airlines.  Are these people really French?  Why can't the DoD
     do something like that?  If the DoD did something like that wouldn't
that
     be a first step in a campaign to become independent from the middle
east.

     Wouldn't oil drilling companies possibly be driven out of business
and
     so wouldn't they ****ft from drilling to producing this biofuel?
