In 1971 I was a senior at the U of Hawaii.  We had 5 kids (I started
late on GI vet ed benefits)  We lived in subsidized low-income fed
housing.  I worked nights after cl***** to make ends meet.  Because of
5 kids my wife did not work except my senior year.
State housing had a lottery for FHA 235 program for non-home owners.
It would give you a new house fee simple with no down.  Thousands put
there names in the lottery, only a handful were picked.  I was one of
them.  The house cost $34,000.  We sold it for $64,000 five years
later, bought a house with the proceeds in San Jose.  Paid $41,000.
Worth $700,000 now.
