A rock was dropped in the pond yesterday. That event is (indeed) gone. It
can't be recovered or changed.
But those who know that it happened know where to look for ripples. And
that
knowledge allows them to use the influences of history (instead of being
bobbed up and down by unexpected forces).
People unaware of their history are subject to its vicissitudes.
