Actually, what you should expect is for all the employees who CAN find
other jobs to actually DO so. What remains is all the deadwood who
nobody else wants to hire. Thus, even if you WANT "engaged associates
who have fun at work" that's not what you're going to get. You're
going to chase all the good employees away, and be left with a bunch
of unskilled, unmotivated, angry people - the kind who come in late,
leave early, don't put forth any real effort, have low morale, and may
even engage in criminal behavior, stealing from you and/or your
customers. Because their performance is poor, you feel justified in
denying them merit pay increases, which only pisses them off more,
causing them to be less productive, etc. etc.

It's a downward spiral from which some companies never recover.
